Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Hausa films, also known as Kannywood, are a significant component of Nigeria's film industry, particularly in the northern region. These films, often produced in the Hausa language, have a unique role in preserving and promoting the cultural values of the Hausa people. Over the years, Kannywood has contributed to the promotion of Hausa traditions, norms, and heritage, while also tackling contemporary social issues (Bello & Umar, 2023). For elders in northern Nigeria, Hausa films serve as a vehicle for transmitting cultural knowledge and societal expectations to younger generations. Elders in communities such as Zaria Local Government Area in Kaduna State rely on these films to shape cultural values, including respect for elders, communal living, family structures, and traditional ceremonies. However, the influence of modern media and globalization has posed challenges to traditional cultural practices. Despite this, Hausa films remain an important medium for preserving these values. This study aims to analyze the role of Hausa films in shaping cultural values among elders in Zaria Local Government Area and to explore how these films reinforce or challenge traditional beliefs and practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While Hausa films are widely consumed across northern Nigeria, there is limited research on their specific role in shaping cultural values among elders in Zaria Local Government Area. Elders play a crucial role in transmitting cultural norms to younger generations, and their perceptions of Hausa films are essential for understanding the cultural impact of these films. However, the increasing influence of Western media and the evolving cultural dynamics in Nigeria have raised concerns about the extent to which Hausa films preserve traditional values or promote new, potentially conflicting norms. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating how Hausa films shape the cultural values of elders, particularly in relation to family, social conduct, and community life in Zaria Local Government. The research will also examine whether Hausa films reinforce or challenge the cultural norms that elders traditionally uphold.
